Notary Appointment Checklist: How to Be Fully Prepared.

Before your notary appointment, being prepared saves time and ensures the process goes smoothly, One of the most common delays in notarization is missing documents or invalid ID. Here's a simple checklist to help you get it right the first time.

Notary Appointment Checklist

  1. ALL Signers Must Be Present

Every person whose signature needs notarizing must be physically present during the appointment -- no exceptions.

  2. Have a Valid Government-Issued ID.

    Make sure your ID is:

    • Unexpired

    • Issued by a state or federal agency

    • Includes your photo, signature, and physical description.

Examples: Driver's license, passport, or state ID card

  3. Bring the document(s) to Be Notarized

    • DO NOT SIGN the document ahead of time-- WAIT until you are in front of the notary.

    • Ensure the document is complete no blank spaces.

  4. Know What Type of Notarization You Need

Acknowledgment, Jurat, Oath, etc. -- if unsure, ask the organization requiring the notarization.

  5. Double-Check Names and Spelling

ALL names on your ID must match the names on the document exactly.

  6. Bring Any Additional Witnesses (If Required)

Some documents need additional witnesses. Confirm ahead of time and let your notary know.
